Chore Chart

We have decided that this summer is the perfect time to introduce Bug-A-Boo to the idea of household chores.  We have also decided that we will be giving her an allowance for doing these chores to start teaching her about the value of money.

The first thing we did was decide on an amount that she could make weekly.  We decided on $3.00 a week.  One dollar for every year of age.   We then decided that each time she completes a chore she can earn $.10, however if she chooses to not complete a chore, and mommy or daddy has to do it, then we get the $.10.  So, the maximum she can make in a week is $3.00 and it goes down from there based on whether she actually does the chore.  Right now this seems to be working.  Since we started, there have been a few times when she has said she didn't want to do one of her chores and when I told her that I would get her dime she quickly changed her mind.

The other nice thing about this system is that as she gets older she will be able to make more money but it will mean we add new chores and new responsibilities appropriate to her age.

THE CHORE CHART

I created the chore chart on the computer.  I made a grid in Excel and added cute clip art and photos to make it interesting and fun for her.

Her chores are as follows:
Monday-Friday:  Make bed (we all get the weekends off)
Monday-Sunday:  Help feed Cori, Help set the table for dinner, Help clear the table after every meal
Monday:  Help gather trash
Sunday:  Fold the napkins
Twice a week:  Help empty dishwasher

The number of times she has chores to do is 30 at $.10 each is $3.00 a week.

I've hung the chart on the side of the refrigerator where she can reach it.  I used an 8-1/2" x 11" sheet of magnetic paper and printed 30 dimes on it.  Using a 1" circle punch I punched out the dimes.  When she completes a chore she gets to mark it off with one of the dime magnets.  This is also helping her in her counting and figuring of money.

We also plan to introduce "bonus" chores when needed.

TEACHING THE VALUE OF MONEY

The main reason we are doing this is to not only teach her about household responsibilities but also the value of money.  Right now we are pretty lucky in the fact that she isn't one of those kids that starts to throw a fit or is constantly saying, "I want that, I want that", when we are at a store.  I'm guessing it is just a matter of time before this starts.

Our goal is that when she does start doing this we will be able to tell her that if she wants something, we can go home and count the money in her bank and if she has enough we can return to the store and she can buy it with her own money.  Knowing Bug-A-Boo she will change her mind pretty quickly.  If she doesn't have enough in her bank she can either keep doing her regular everyday chores and save up the money or she will be given the option of  doing extra work and this is when the "bonus" chores will come into play.

As she gets older and starts to understand the concept of money a little better we plan to introduce a more  detailed teaching.  A percentage (40%) of her weekly allowance will automatically be put into her savings account (similar to having taxes taken out of a paycheck).  A percentage (10%) will go to charity, which will be chosen around the holidays each year.   A percentage (15%) will go into her college fund, which we will match on a yearly basis (similar to a 401K plan).  The remaining (35%) can be used in any way she wishes.

With a $4.00 weekly allowance this adds up to $83.20 a year in savings, $20.80 a year to charity, $31.20 into her college fund ($62.40 with our match) and $72.80 a year to be used however she would like.  Not bad for a four year old.

28 Days of Sketches: Days 12-15

Slowly but surely I am plugging my way through this class.  It has been extremely busy lately with school coming to an end and house projects but I've been able to get a little scrapbooking in and I was able to finish my Disney Princess Half-Marathon Theme Album.

Back to 28 Days of Sketches though.  Here is sketch 12:

Instead of journaling I added quotes about running, winning, challenges, etc. to the page.

I used sketch 12 as a companion to a flipped sketch 10 to create a double page spread:

Here is sketch 13:

I used the basic sketch and created a page for my needs.  I made a pocket page to hold miscellaneous memorabilia from the race and on the pocket portion is where I used the sketch for the layout of the photos.

Sketch 14:

I decided to go to my storage binders for a photo to do this layout.  I wanted to find a photo that had a story that could be told with the title and I think I found it.  When Sydney was only a month old I took some extreme close up shots of her making some monkey faces.  In this photo she was excited and waving her hands.  When I saw it later it reminded me of the final scene from "Meet The Parents" with Ben Stiller..."Can you deal with that?"

Sketch 15:

I changed a few things and flipped a few things in order to use it as a double page spread.

Sketch 15 is the companion page for sketch 13 to create a double page spread.

Since I was able to finish my Disney Half-Marathon Weekend theme album the rest of the sketches will use photos from my storage binders that have been waiting to be scrapbooked.  Can't wait to dig in.

My Party Planning Book

I love to entertain and throw parties. At one point several years ago I even considered a career as an event/party planner.  I had a business plan and a registered business name, No Surprises Event Planning.  I joined some professional organizations and was ready to go.  I planned a few events for some friends and family and I liked it enough but after those few events and doing more research and talking to other professional planners I decided that I would much rather be entertaining and planning parties for myself.

When Bug-A-Boo was born and we joined the MOMS Club I was afforded a plethora of opportunities to host parties and playdates for the little ones and their moms.  Last year, I decided that I was going to try to throw a themed playdate/party for Bug-A-Boo and her friends once a month.

The parties were so much fun to plan.  I had a Winnie-The-Pooh party, Valentines, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, Tinkerbell and Friends and more.  It also includes Bug-A-Boo's birthday parties.  Each party had themed decorations, music, food, craft and favor bags.  The kids had fun and so did the moms.

Because of the number of parties as well as the amount of "stuff" (ie. recipes, crafts, decorations) that each party produced I decided to put it all in one book that would be part reference book and part scrapbook.  I wanted something that I could have in case I ever wanted to replicate something from a party as well as a book that Bug-A-Boo could look back at and see how much fun it was and how important it was to me to do things for her.

The easiest way to create the book was in an 8-1/2" x 11" three ring binder, which I got at Target.  I also got page protectors and section dividers that matched the binder.  I then gathered all of the things from each party and started putting them in the page protectors.  This was such a quick and easy project and it is a wonderful reference.

My Party Planning Book is an ongoing project and as I continue to throw parties, whether for Bug-A-Boo or for grown ups, I will keep adding to it.  Maybe one day Bug-A-Boo will be a mommy and she can use the book to help her show her little one(s) how much she loves them.

Blogging

I love the idea of a blog.  I have a blog.  Actually, I have two blogs.  The only problem I have is making the time to update them.  The blog I currently use, The Driver's Manual, is done using iWeb on my Mac and it just seems so labor intensive.

I love this blog but I often wonder if I've just made it TOO MUCH, you know?  Right now it has seven tabs that I originally updated at least on a monthly basis.  I have the Chief Executive Mom, The Kitchen (recipes and party photos), My Office (scrapbooking projects), The Library (book reviews), Vacation Time (vacation photos and journals), a tab all about my daughter and Kelly's Blog (random stuff).

I think maybe I just need to pick one and go with it.

I think I choose Scrapbooking!

There are several blogs out there that inspire me and that I would love to emulate.   In the meantime I'm just going to think about what I want this blog to be and go from there.
