HPSC: Week 12, Muggle Studies and End of Term

Week twelve:  August 14-18

This is our last week of class and I had a hard time coming up with a class but then I thought what about Muggle Studies.  We could fit in a bunch of stuff that didn't necessarily fit into any of the other weeks.

Day 1

We continued with our Divination journals by drawing an Oracle Card and recording it.  We also completed reading the Illustrated Edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.  On the Harry Potter Bloomsbury website I found a Chamber of Secrets discussion guide and a Certificate of Completion.  There was also a lot of other really great things on this website that inspired several of the things we did this summer.

Day 2

Today we learned about the Muggle device called the television by visiting the Old Hilliard Early Television Museum.  I had no idea that this place even existed but we went and were pleasantly surprised.  It was really cool and definitely a hidden gem.

Day 3

Today we were supposed to go and see a favorite Muggle past time...a baseball game.  The Columbus Clippers were playing the Rochester Red Wings.

Day 4

Today we are taking our OWLS Exam, which is just book trivia.

On our final day I awarded Bug-a-Boo all of the Girl Scout Badges that she earned this summer.

I was so lucky to have been able to find Girl Scout Badges that fit our theme perfectly and really enhanced our summer camp.  

 We also finished out latch hook rugs.  Now we just have to finish off the edges.

This Harry Potter summer camp for my Bug-a-Boo is one of the most involved, organized, creative and daunting things I have ever created and I am so proud of it and so happy that I was able to have all this fun and all these adventures with my favorite little witch.  I hope it is something that she will always remember.  I hope one day I can do it for my grandchildren if I am so blessed.

HPSC: Week 10, Care of Magical Creatures/Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Week ten:  July 31-August 4

This week we are combining Care of Magical Creatures with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Day 1

Today we worked on our Little Monsters and Study of Dragons worksheets and we are going to create our own Fantastic Beast out of clay.

Day 2

Today we went to a garden store for Fairy Garden items and we created a Fairy Garden in our backyard.

Day 3

We worked on the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Spells & Potions Spiders and Snakes science kit.  The activities were a little difficult to do and we were a little disappointed in them.  We also worked on our coloring books and read the Illustrated Edition of Chamber of Secrets.

Day 4

We watched Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them while we worked on our latch hook rugs.

Day 5

Our field trip today was a visit to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

HPSC: Week 9, Flying Lessons

Week nine:  July 24-28

This week we take to the air with Flying Lessons.

Day 1

Today we started on our Harry Potter Quidditch puzzle.  Hopefully we can finish it up this week.

We also pulled out the Harry Potter Spells & Potions Science Kit.  This one was Physics, which I thought was appropriate.

We did the first activity which was the balance challenge.  It was a fun mobile that we had to make and get just right so that it would balance when we hung it up.

Day 2

Today we did our Nimbus 2000 coloring sheets.  We also started decorating our brooms (unfortunately we never finished).

We worked on our puzzle and read from the Illustrated Edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Day 3

Today we worked on some more activities in the science kit as well as working on our puzzle and watching Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, part 2.

Day 4

We played a Harry Potter Would You Rather game.

Worked on our puzzle and we were going to write a sports story for the Daily Prophet but didn't get around to it.

Day 5

For our Field Trip today we were going to go to the United States Air Force Museum in Dayton.

HPSC: Week 8, Defense Against the Dark Arts

Week eight:  July 17-21

I planned this week to coincide with TaeKwonDo camp.  There is no better way to defend yourself against dark arts or anything dark than a round kick to the head.

Day 1

Today we drew our Boggarts and then we drew them Riddikulus.

We were also going to draw our Patronus's but didn't get around to it.

Day 2

Since chocolate is said to help the after effects of a Dementor attack today we made some chocolate goodies...Chocolate Frogs and Fizzing Whizzbees, which are two of our favorite Defense Against Dark Arts.

We also did a Chocolate Frog Coloring Sheet.

Day 3

Today we worked on our latch hook rugs and colored in our Harry Potter coloring books and watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow, part 1.

Day 4

Today was our Horcrux Hunt.  While doing research for this camp I came across a blog called Sophie's World and she had created a Horcrux Hunt for a birthday party that she did.  I took some of her ideas and changed them up to fit our needs.

HPSC: Week 7, Herbology

Week seven:  July 10-14

This week we tap into our inner Neville Longbottom as we explore Herbology.

Day 1

Before we got started with Herbology, Bug-a-Boo completed Step #3 of the Girls Scout Junior Scribe badge by writing a short one-page skit/script about our fun weekend in Nashville.  She wrote a very silly reenactment of when we met Arrow star, Stephen Amell.

Then we went for a walk and picked some wildflowers in order to make a craft tomorrow.

Next we completed Step 2 of the Girl Scout Junior Gardening Badge.  We created our dream gardens by cutting out pictures of flowers, trees and other plants from magazines and making a collage out of them.  We had so much fun doing this activity.

Day 2

The first thing we did today was we created our very own magical plant using our Herbology Class worksheet.

Next we used another Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Spells & Potions Science Kit.  This one was Herbology & Other Plant Sciences.  Today we did the Hairy Plant activity, which was basically a DIY Chia Head plant.  We had fun making it.

We also went to Oakland Nursery to buy some plants in order to complete Step #3 of the Girl Scouts Juniors Garden Badge.  We had to buy 2 seeds and 2 bulbs and then plant them.

We also made a craft from the flowers that we picked yesterday which completed Step#4 of the Girl Scouts Juniors Flowers Badge.  We dried the flowers in the microwave between 2 ceramic tiles and then used Mod Podge to adhere them to a painted canvas.

Day 3

Today we learned about the meaning of flowers and then went to our local florist to buy some flowers and make an arrangement as a gift which completed Step #5 of the Girl Scout Juniors Flower badge.

We also were going to go to the Franklin Park Conservatory for our Herbology Field Trip.

Day 4

We continued with the activities in the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Spells & Potions Science Kit.  Today we did Floating Plants and the A-maze-ing activity.

We also got some pots and planted the seeds we bought earlier in the week which completed Step #4 & 5 of the Girl Scout Juniors Garden Badge.

Day 5

We were supposed to go to Toledo this weekend for the Mudhens celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Harry Potter.  We had tickets, hotel and everything, however, with everything that has been going on with my dad we were all so exhausted that we decided not to go.  We were a little bummed out but in the long run we needed the rest more and more importantly we needed to be in town to support my mom.
