Brownie Meeting 16: Choosing a Take Action Project

Meeting at a Glance 

Goal:  Brownie team members identify a community need that matters to them and begin to create a solution - a way to Fly into Action and accomplish something on behalf of others.

Pre-Meeting (15 min)

-Greet, sign-in, and put on nametags. 

Snack Time (Snacks, Step #4) (10 min)

Opening (5 min)

- Flag Ceremony

-  Gather and greet each other with the Girl Scout handshake. 

Business (10 min)

• In the Girl Scout Brownie Ring, take attendance and collect dues, review rules and assign kapers.
• Hand out the Dancer Skill Building Badges that the girls earned at the last meeting.

-“Today we are going to take the first step toward our third key, which is figuring out who needs some help from our Brownie Team.”

Activity/Exploration (50 min)

• Brownie Brainstorm Chart for our Take Action Project (idea: Organize, promote, and operate a food drive for the Food Bank.  Write a letter to the Food Bank asking what items they need and if we could sponsor a food drive for them.  Write to school principals asking to hang posters up in school advertising the food drive.  Send home flyers with students advertising the food drive.  Have a food drive at a Grocery Store on a weekend afternoon.  Take food to Food Bank and volunteer there to help stock the shelves.)

• If needed, vote on a Take Action Project.  We should probably have at least a top 3 list of possible projects in case something falls through or doesn’t work out.
• Read Chapter 4 of Brownie Quest book and fill in pages 31-33.
• Make a Brownie Plan.  IMPORTANT:  Choose a date for the project…Saturday, May 16 or Sunday, May 17.  (I can call both the Food Bank and Kroger to see if they will allow us to do it and if either of these dates will work)
• Make posters for our Home School cafeteria to encourage kids to make healthy choices for breakfast.

Clean-up (10 min)

• ALL girls participate in the clean-up time! Remind the girls of kapers and work together to leave the site better than you found it. 
• The Out Scout should be rotating the names on the Kaper Chart to see who will bring the snack and beverage for the next meeting. 

Closing (5 min)

• FRIENDSHIP CIRCLE – Use the Girl Scout Sign again to get the girls’ attention. Ask girls to gather around and form a circle. 
• Connect Key Celebration Ceremony.  Hand out the Connect Key patches.
• Let the girls know who will be bringing the snack next time and ask the girls to take the Snack Box home.  Remind girls to show their parent the note inside the snack box.
• Form a Friendship Circle, sing, “Goodbye Brownies,” and do a friendship squeeze. 

-  Collect nametags and sign-out. 

*This would be a good meeting to have a parent iron-on session.

Brownie Meeting 8: Be a Philanthropist

Meeting at a Glance 

Goal: Girls know how to make the world a better place by being Philanthropists. 

Toward the Award: Earn the Philanthropist badge 

Supplies:

Pre-Meeting (15 min)

• Greet, sign-in, and put on nametags. 
• Start cutting out pictures of needs and wants from magazines.

Snack time (Snacks, Step #2) (10 min)

Opening (5 min)

-  Flag Ceremony

-  Gather and greet each other with the Girl Scout handshake. 

Business (10 min)

-In the Girl Scout Brownie Ring, review rules, assign kapers.

-“Today we are going to learn about what it means to make the world a better place by being Philanthropists.  Does anyone know what a Philanthropist is?  That is just a big word for someone who makes sure people have what they need."

Activity/Exploration (50 min)

• Create a “need” and “want” poster. (Philanthropist, Steps #1) 

• Talk to the girls about how the food bank helps people get food, how second hand shops like Goodwill help people get clothes, go through the Disaster Preparedness Coloring Books to learn how to help in times of emergency. (Philanthropist, Steps #2, #3, &#4)

• Talk to the girls about and start our “Penny Bank”.  The girls can collect pennies for a cause they care about.

• Collect Thanksgiving food to be delivered to the Hilliard Food Bank (Philanthropist, Step #5)
• mashed potato mix
• canned corn, carrots or green beans
• biscuit mix
• canned yams
• canned cranberry sauce
• stuffing mix
• canned pie filling

Clean-up (10 min)

-  ALL girls should participate! Remind girls of kapers and work together to leave the site better than you found it .

• The Out Scout should be rotating the names on the Kaper Chart to see who will bring the snack and beverage for the next meeting. 

Closing (5 min)

• Form a Friendship Circle and ask the girls to think of other ways that they can make the world a better place. Encourage the girls to share these ideas with their families. 
• Talk to the girls about the Cookie Exchange on December 18th.
• Hand out the Philanthropist badge. 

-  Sing a song, and do a friendship squeeze.

-  Collect nametags and sign-out. 

Daisy Meeting 12: Make the World a Better Place, Amazing Daisy Award

This meeting is the completion of our Journey and the girls project to help make the world a better place and help to beautify our home school by planting flowers.

o Girl Scout Daisy, The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting

o Make the World a Better Place petals

o Gloves and trash bags for picking up trash

o Planters, soil, flowers

Pre-Meeting

Greet, sign-in, and put on nametags and collect completed parent/guardian permission

forms.

Opening

Gather and greet each other with the Girl Scout handshake.

Say the Girl Scout Promise.

Sing “Make New Friends” or ask for requests.

Business

“Today we are going to learn about what it means to make the world a better place and do our Take Action Project."

Activity/Exploration

Read “Rosie’s Story” and talk about it using the questions in the Girl’s Guide.

Go outdoors and plant the flowers in the planters to help beautify the school and complete our Take Action project.

Congratulate the girls for earning the Make the World a Better Place petal and the Amazing Daisy Journey award.

Clean-up

Remind girls of kapers and work together to leave the site better than you found it

Closing

Form a Daisy Circle and ask the girls to think of three ways to reduce their trash at home.

Encourage the girls to share these ideas with their families.

Explain that they will meet with another troop to celebrate World Thinking Day at the

next meeting.

Form a Friendship Circle, sing, “Goodbye, Daisies,” and do a friendship squeeze.

Hand out the Rosie, Make the World a Better Place petal.

Have girls use the Rosie, Make the World a Better Place, petal sticker and awards log in

their Girl’s Guide.

Collect nametags and sign-out.

Daisy Meeting 11: Be a Sister to Every Girl Scout

This meeting was a special one.  When the girls finish first grade, they are ready to become a Brownie.  Girl Scouts calls this "bridging".  In order to Bridge to Brownies and earn the award you need to complete two bridging steps.

Step 2:  Look Ahead
In this step the current Daisies need to get together with a Brownie Troop to learn about what it is like to be a Brownie and what some of the fun and experiences they will have as Brownies.

I reached out to a friend of mine who is a leader for a Brownie Troop and we invited them to our meeting.

We thought this would also be a perfect meeting to work on the Be a Sister to Every Girl Scout petal.

We also worked the Global Action Award into this meeting by having a food drive for the local Food Pantry.

Meeting 11: Be a Sister to Every Girl Scout

Meeting at a Glance

Goal: Girls know how to be a sister to every Girl Scout and complete step 2 of the Bridging Award and the Global Action Award

Toward the Award: Earn the Be a Sister to Every Girl Scout petal, Global Action award.

Ask the girls if they talked to their families about reducing trash at home.

Opening

Gather and greet each other with the Girl Scout handshake.

Say the Girl Scout Promise.

Sing “Make New Friends” or ask for requests.

Business

In the Girl Scout Daisy Circle, have both troops share their troop rules and kapers and talk

about what is the same and different.

“Today we are going to learn about what it means to be a sister to every Girl Scout and

learn about Global Action."

Activity/Exploration

Ask the older Girl Scouts to buddy up with Daisies and read “Vi’s Story” and talk about it

using the questions in the Girl’s Guide.

Ask the older Girl Scouts to share a favorite activity with the Daisies.

For the Global Action activity talk to the girls about hunger.  Have them think of a time when they were very hungry.  How did it make them feel?  Perhaps tired or cranky?  How did they feel once they ate and were no longer hungry?  What do they think are reasons why some people around the world don't have enough to eat?  Talk about the local Food Pantry and how they help the community.  Collect food for our food drive.

Get in the Daisy Circle and with the help of the older Girl Scouts say the entire Girl Scout

Law.

Closing

Form a Daisy Circle and ask both troops to share how they close their meetings.

Hand out the Be a Sister to Every Girl Scout petal and World Thinking Day award to the

Daisies.

Girl’s Guide.

Form a Friendship Circle, sing, “Goodbye, Daisies,” and do a friendship squeeze.
